12 Powerful Names of God

I have been a Christian for over 20 years. Throughout that time, I realize God is so much bigger than I could ever imagine. Every time I create a box for God, He shows me that the box is too small. When you read the bible, we see God has many names. Each name reflects a part of God’s nature and character. There are many names of God, but I want to focus on 12 powerful Names of God.

12 Powerful Names of God

“In the Old Testament times, a name was not only identification but an identity as well. Many times a special meaning was attached to the name. Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself to us through His names. When we study these names that He reveals to us in the Bible, we will better understand who God really is. The meanings behind God’s names reveal the central personality and nature of the who bears them.” **

1. Prince of Peace

Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

2. The Light

1 John 1:5-6 “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.”

John 8:12 “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

3. King of Kings

Revelations 19:16 (ESV) On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.

Revelations 17:14 (ESV) They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.

4. Good Shepherd

John 10:11,15 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep…I lay down my life for the sheep.

John 10:14-15 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father…

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

5. The Vine

John 15:1-2 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away, and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 

John 15:5-7 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

6. The Way

John 14:6 KJV – Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Romans 10:9-11 Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes and is justified, and with the mouth, one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”

7. Emmanuel

Isaiah 7:14 (ESV) Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel 

Matthew 1:23 Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel.

8. The alpha and Omega

Revelation 1:8 ESV “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

John 1:1-4  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

9. Son of God

Matthew 17:5 ESV He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”

Hebrews 4:15  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.

10. The Truth

John 8:31-32 KJV – Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Proverbs 30:5 ESV Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

11. Mighty God

Jeremiah 10:12 ESV It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens.

Romans 6:9-10 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.

12. Lamb of God

John 1:29 The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Leviticus 17:11 For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.

Conclusion

When I first started this blogging series, I had the goal of knowing more about who God is. I think that I have accomplished that. I have shared with you 12 posts, each one with a different name of God and scripture to show that everything we have shared is true.
