Who am I? This is a question that many people ask themselves in their lives.

When we become Christians, our identity shifts into a greater purpose. No longer are we trying to figure out who we are as people, but who we are as Christians. This leads us to ask: Who are we in Christ?

Know Who You Are In Christ

When you give your life to Christ, you’re no longer living for yourself. You are a part of a greater purpose. God has a purpose and a plan for every one of us, long before we even chose Him

Once Christ becomes a part of your life, you want to learn all you can about Him.

  • Who was He?
  • What was His purpose on this earth?
  • How can I be more like Him?

When you find out what His purpose is for this world, you find out that this world is not our home. As Christ-followers, we have been assigned to grow the Kingdom and develop a stronger link within the Church (with a capital “C”).

What Is An Identity?

Your identity comes from the things in your life that define you. It might be a title of relationship in your life or the work you do. It could also be the hobbies you enjoy or the people you’re around.

Your identity also comes from the values and morals that you keep. Believing in certain topics or ideas narrows your identity to certain groups and columns.

Your identity is never final. It changes with every interest you have, new relationships that come, and new opinions you develop.

When Christ Changes Your Identity

When a person accepts Christ as their Savior, they are possibly changing their identity and doing a complete 180.

Before Christ, it’s possible that they were a part of the complete opposite of what Christ represents.

When they accept Jesus, their identity becomes intertwined with His.

Jesus is the Constant, and we are the variables. We are always changing but Christ stays the same. He doesn’t mould around us, we mould ourselves around Him.

5 Ways Jesus changes our identity

To find out who you are in Christ, you must first realize what He does in your life.

1. We no longer chase after our own desires

When looking back on our own identity before Christ, it was defined as our own interests, relationships, and titles. When we become Christ-followers, it becomes completely about Him.

What I can do to bring glory to God today? How can I invite God into the challenges of my life? How can I further God’s Kingdom?

These questions bring ourselves and our identity into a place that becomes more about God and less about ourselves.

2. We stop comparing ourselves to others.

When we realize this world has a greater purpose, our daily life and trials become minimal. Before we were trying to keep up with everyone and everything around us. In competition to have the best things.

When we accept Christ in our lives, we receive the very BEST thing we could ever imagine. Suddenly the things we thought we wanted, don’t seem so important anymore.

3. We stop fearing the future.

God has a plan for everyone He calls into service. When we find that out, we stop wondering what will happen to us.

We realize that God’s plan is all we need and we no longer are afraid of what’s going to happen in the end.

4. We receive an identity shift

When our identity was categorized by the things we had interests in, the people we have a relationship with, and the duties we have accepted, our identity shifts to Christ.

Everything we considered a part of ourselves becomes “plus Jesus”.

An example of this would be that my identity as a mother means I’m going to bring Jesus into my relationship with my kids.

Everything that was a part of your identity, gives you the opportunity to bring Christ along to spread His love to others.

When Christ enters our lives, we receive an identity that reflects His own.
