5 steps to Hearing God’s Voice

It’s easy to get discouraged when you don’t know if you’ve heard God. You feel like God has gone silent, but that is probably not the case. God is always speaking and listening. We are not listening or we don’t realize how God is speaking to us. Here are 5 Steps to hearing God’s voice.

5 Steps to Hearing God’s Voice

1. Identify God’s voice

It is hard to hear a voice when you don’t know who it belongs to. The first step in hearing God’s voice is knowing what it sounds like.

In 1 Samuel 3, God was calling out to Samuel, but he didn’t recognize who it was. Once Eli told Samuel who was calling him and what to say, Samuel responded to God. “And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant hears.”

At first, Samuel didn’t recognize God’s voice. He had to be told who was speaking to him and how to respond. One he knew, he was willing to sit and listen.

By experience, you can learn to recognize God’s voice when He speaks and to confidently respond to what He says.

How can we be sure what we are hearing is actually of God?

If you think God is speaking to you, ask Him to confirm so as you study and meditate on the Bible, as you’re alert to the circumstances you encounter, or as you experience the Holy Spirit’s impressions in your mind.

2. Be still before God

It is impossible to hear something when you are always hearing noise around you. When we become preoccupied with the things of the world, we can often miss God’s voice because everything else is taking up our attention.

We live in a 24 h/day world. We have immediate access to news, updates, and entertainment at all times. When we get bored, the first thing we do is reach for our phones.

We don’t take the time and sit still before God.

The word of God encourages us to stand still in His presence.

Psalm 37:7 Be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes.

Psalm 62:5-6 Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken.

Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

3. Expect that God will speak to you

We may be in an exciting time where we have access to the Bible in our home language, but that doesn’t mean that we are always hearing what God is saying to us.

We have to expect and believe that God speaks to us. We have to make the extra effort to listen and to see what God is saying to us.

Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

4. Recognize that God communicates in many forms

You may have heard that God speaks to us through the Bible and prayer, but did you know He has other ways to communicate with us?

He talks to us through:

  • Prompts in our mind and hearts: Isaiah 30:21 And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.
  • Other people: Proverbs 19:20 Listen to counsel and accept discipline, That you may be wise the rest of your days.
  • Through our circumstances: Acts 16:6-7 Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. 7 After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them

God is always there communicating with us; we just need to pay attention.

5. Pray for a greater ability to hear God’s voice

It’s often tempting to try to do things on our own or go our own way. Through many years of following God, I’ve learned that I may not understand the road He guides me down, but He knows and I can trust Him.

There are many things we will never understand and The Lord encourages us to come to Him and ask for wisdom.

  • James 1:5-6  If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

If we don’t root ourselves in Christ and who He is, we won’t have an anchor and we will jump from one belief to another and won’t have any stability.

  • Psalm 37:23-24  The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; 24 though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.
